The Okotoks Dawgs Black team lost to Medicine Hat in the opening game of the Mary Oikawa Tournament at Spitz Stadium in Lethbridge, Alberta. After that loss the Dawgs went 5-0 winning by a combined score of 60-7 including avenging the loss to Medicine Hat with a 12-0 victory in the Championship Game.
The Dawgs got off to a great start Sunday as Layne Currie hit a bases loaded single in the 2nd inning to score two and Chris Shaw hit a solo homerun to make it 3-0 after three innings. The Dawgs opened in up as they put up 9 runs in the fourth inning and won by the run rule 12-0 in 5 innings. Shawn Andersen went 3 innings and Eric Kahl two, to combine for a shutout. Brendan Rose went 3 for 3 with 3 doubles and Jared Frew had a big bases clearing double.
Eduardo Sanchez led the way offensively as he went 10 for 15 on the weekend with 10 RBI while filling in at every infield position while players were in school. Ramon Valdez hit two homeruns on the weekend as well.
The pitching was key as the Dawgs threw 4 shutouts on the weekend including a no-hitter by Wyle Cunningham who beat the Edmonton Cardinals 4-0 without giving up a hit and striking out nine. Jake Shaw threw a shutout against the Regina A's and Cole Slamko threw four shutout and Brendan Rose pitched one scoreless to cap another shutout against the Saskatoon Diamondbacks. Kurtis Taylor got his eighth win of the season on Saturday going 5 innings and surrendering just two runs.
The Dawgs record now improves to 42-6-1 and they head into a crucial weekend in league play on the weekend playing Edmonton 1 on Saturday and Sherwood Park Gold on Sunday.
The Dawgs Red team swept their league weekend beating Spruce Grove twice and Edmonton 2 twice putting them in third place in the league. The boys hit all weekend and Roberto Valdez hit a homerun today!
